Room Rate: $390 per night, single/double occupancy plus taxes and fees
Reservation Deadline: Wednesday, February 22, 2023
Hotel reservations are on a first-come, first served basis until Wednesday, February 22, 2023, or until the block has sold out. ACREL cannot guarantee the group rate after Wednesday, February 22, 2023. Room reservations are subject to cancellation if guest is not registered for the ACREL Mid-Year Meeting by March 1, 2023.
Transportation

CHS is 12 miles or 25 minutes from the hotel (depending on traffic).
The Charleston Place hotel does not offer ground transportation, but car service can be arranged through the hotel bell stand by calling 843.724.8415. The fee each way for two people is $115.
Parking
Valet parking is available at the hotel for $45/day, or there is a parking garage next door to the property that is available for $18/day. Please note, the parking garage is not affiliated with the hotel and is run by the City of Charleston.

Cancellation and Refund Policy
Fees are fully refundable for cancellations received in writing by February 28, 2023. Cancellations made on or after March 1 are non-refundable. All refunds will be processed following the meeting. Telephone cancellations must be confirmed in writing. On-site registrations will be subject to a $100 surcharge. No-shows at the meeting will not receive a refund. Tour registrations are not refundable.

Friday - ACREL Cares Project - Charleston Parks Conservancy Under the direction of Adam Weissburg, ACREL is undertaking another ACREL Cares project in Charleston. Fellows and their guests are encouraged to volunteer for a local project with Charleston Parks Conservancy, which unites local resources, leverages support and organizes volunteers to be stewards of Charleston's urban parks. Our group will be working in one of the City of Charleston Parks located on the downtown peninsula. Volunteers will need to wear closed toed shoes, clothes to get dirty in and bring plenty of water. The Conservancy will provide all necessary tools and directions on site. We'll also have snacks, water, gloves, sunscreen and bug spray. ACREL will provide lunch for all participants. |

Friday - Gullah Tour Join Alphonso Brown, owner and operator of Gullah Tours, Inc., on a driving tour through the places, history, and lores relevant to the rich and varied contributions of black Charlestonians. Gullah is an English-based, creolized language that naturally evolved from the unique circumstances of, and was spoken by, the slaves in South Carolina and Georgia. Visit Denmark Vesey’s home, catfish Row, the Old Slave Mart, and the Market. Learn about the sweetgrass basket makers sewing their baskets, the Aiken-Rhett House slave quarters, black slave owners, and blacksmith Philip Simmons. Brown’s distinctive narration, combined with the detailed maps and vibrant descriptions in a native Gullah, make this a do my homework unique and enjoyable way to experience the Holy City. |

Friday - Home and Garden Walking Tour Guests will be met by a licensed tour guide inside the hotel lobby. Alongside their passionate tour guide, guests will explore Charleston’s vibrant historic neighborhoods. They’ll enjoy a Charleston historic home or two for a half hour tour, per home. Afterwards, the private tour guide will walk guests back to the hotel pointing out more historic sights of our wonderful city. Some sights include St. Michael’s Church, the Nathaniel Russell House, Washington Square Park and many other historic landmarks and exquisite gardens. Proper footwear for uneven sidewalks required. |

Saturday - Historic Preservation Walking Tour w/ Lunch and Hosted Reception Learn about Charleston’s ongoing historic preservation efforts and visit historically significant homes protected through the work of dedicated individuals and nonprofit organizations whose mission is to preserve Charleston’s distinct southern architecture and character. You will also learn about some of Charleston’s most famous (or infamous) residents and other curious facts about the City. Following the tour, Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP will host a reception at their office located at 12 Exchange Street with drinks and light hors d’oeuvres. |

Saturday Tour - Fort Sumter Tour Visit Historic Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began. Located in the center of Charleston’s harbor, it is only accessible by boat. The tour consists of approximately 1 hour at Fort Sumter, followed by a 1 hour and 15-minute cruise around Charleston's historic harbor. During the harbor cruise portion of your tour, you’ll enjoy the panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean and entrance to Charleston Harbor. At the fort, you are narrated by the National Parks Service and can visit an excellent museum containing priceless Civil War exhibits. A guide will go with your group to provide a “light” tour, give directions, get tickets, and escort the group, but not necessarily talk the whole time. Be sure you wear appropriate footwear, head cover, sunscreen, and sunglasses. |
